James Brown was an Afro-American singer.
He sang rhythm and
blues, soul, funk and jazz.
He was also an excellent dancer.
He was born on May 3rd
, 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina.
His
nicknames were the Godfather of Soul and Mister Dynamite and he
was described as the hardest working man in show business.
He
made popular the funk which is a form of Afro-American music that
emerged in the USA at the end of the 1960’s and some people
consider that he also initiated rap.
James Joseph Brown came from a poor family.
When he was 4, his
parents divorced and at age 6, he moved to Augusta with his father
who left him to his aunt’s care.
As a teenager, he made a living as a
shoe-shiner or picking cotton and he learnt how to play the guitar
with Tempa Red.
He soon became a criminal.
At 16, he was arrested for armed
robbery.
In jail, he created his own gospel group.
After his release from prison, he became a member of Bobby Byrd’s
